The Bob Osborne 1936-1948 Olympic Games Collection

I love buying old Hockey and Baseball cards but the deals that get my adrenaline pumping, are the truly rare finds! Over lunch, local sports historian Fred Hume and I examine some of the memorabilia from the late Robert (Bob) Osborne’s 1936-1948 Olympic Games collection. Mr. Osborne represented Canada as a member of the men’s Basketball team at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. During his stay, Mr. Osborne attended some events outside of his own sport. He kept 3 programs and made personal notations on the results including track and field events won by Jesse Owens! This great athlete would win 4 gold medals for the USA! This humiliated Adolf Hitler who saw these Games as an opportunity to promote his government and the ideals of racial supremacy! No slouch himself, Osborne helped Canada win a silver medal in Basketball! He would return to the Olympics two more times. First in 1948 at the London, England games as coach of the men’s Basketball team. He made his final visit to the world’s sporting stage at the 1956 Summer Games (XVI Olympiad) in Australia, this time as manager of Canada’s track and field contingent.

Mr. Osborne is a member of the Canadian Olympic Hall Of Fame, the British Columbia Sports Hall Of Fame, The University Of British Columbia (UBC) Sports Hall Of Fame, The British Columbia Basketball Hall Of Fame amongst his many other athletic and scholastic accomplishments. It’s an incredible feeling to hold in my hands, actual items that were worn representing our country as part of a historical, world event!
